John Constantine is heading back to the big screen. DC Studios is developing a new film about the chain-smoking occult detective, according to a report from Deadline, and fans are already buzzing about one name in particular: Glen Powell.
Per the report, Francis Galluppi, the filmmaker behind The Last Stop in Yuma County and the director of Evil Dead Wrath, has been tapped to write the script. The project is said to be in early development, and DC Studios declined to comment.
Where Does Glen Powell Fit In?
For now, the Powell connection is only a rumour. Powell has reportedly been in early conversations with DC Studios about an undisclosed role, which sparked plenty of speculation, including talk of Batman. After the Constantine news broke, insider Jeff Sneider suggested the project could easily be the film Powell has been discussing with the studio. Neither DC nor Powell has confirmed anything.
The Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters star has become one of Hollywood’s busiest leading men, so landing a major comic book role would be a natural next step.
What About Keanu Reeves?
The news also raises questions about Constantine 2. Keanu Reeves, director Francis Lawrence and writer Akiva Goldsman were announced in 2022 to be reuniting for a sequel to the 2005 cult favourite, though the team has since said the script still wasn’t where it needed to be. It remains unclear whether the new film replaces that project or exists alongside it.
The character has also appeared on TV, with Matt Ryan playing him in NBC’s Constantine and across the Arrowverse. Whoever takes on the trench coat next will have big shoes to fill.
