Nicolas Cage has an unusual living situation right now. Speaking at a Los Angeles Comic Con panel over Halloween weekend, the Oscar winner revealed he is “currently a little bit homeless” after a sinkhole opened up at his Malibu home.
“Something happened in my house in Malibu. So, I’m just sort of living in hotels,” Cage told the crowd in a fan-recorded clip, adding that it meant he wouldn’t get the trick-or-treaters he usually enjoys on Halloween.
The sinkhole began forming on September 7 and fully opened the next day in the driveway of Cage’s coastal mansion, according to an emergency proclamation from the City of Malibu. It measured roughly 25 to 30 feet deep and about 30 by 60 feet across, and footage showed a huge crater where the driveway used to be.
The damage reached well beyond Cage’s property. Seven homes were red-tagged for hazardous conditions, and another 24 were red-tagged because they had lost safe vehicle access. City officials said the sinkhole also caused a gas leak, and gas service in the area was shut off. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Officials have not announced what caused the collapse. The housing association that controls the area is handling repairs, which the city said were expected to take around five weeks, “depending on conditions.” It’s still unclear when Cage will be able to move back in.
Being between homes hasn’t slowed him down. Cage is about to return as arms dealer Yuri Orlov in Lords of War, the long-awaited sequel to 2005’s Lord of War, which hits theaters on January 22, 2027. Judging by his sense of humor about the whole thing, a hotel suite seems to be suiting him just fine for now.
