In the 1997 episode “The Muffin Tops,” Elaine inspires her former boss Mr. Lippman to open a shop that sells only the tops of muffins: Top of the Muffin to You!
Where the Idea Came From
Writer Spike Feresten said on the season 8 DVD that he swapped out a last-minute Elaine subplot for the muffin idea. It was inspired by a girlfriend named Laurie who only ate the tops.
Feresten was also behind some of the show’s other classic ideas, including the Soup Nazi, so he had a knack for turning small habits into big storylines.
The Line Everyone Remembers
Julia Louis-Dreyfus sells the concept perfectly: “It’s the best part. It’s crunchy, it’s explosive… Just sell the tops.”
The Stumps Problem
The plan has one big flaw: what do you do with the bottoms? In the episode, the leftover muffin stumps pile up with nowhere to go, and the business eventually sinks under them, a perfect Seinfeld twist.
Did Seinfeld Invent the Muffin Top?
Not quite. Prairie City Bakery had already been selling muffin tops nationally since 1994. Founder Bill Skeens told Baking Business that after the episode aired on May 8, 1997, “What I had been trying to do for six years, ‘Seinfeld’ did overnight.”
So the show didn’t create the product, but it gave it an enormous cultural boost. McDonald’s later even tested muffin toppers, and “muffin top” became a phrase people still use today.
Classic Season 8
“The Muffin Tops” aired during Seinfeld‘s eighth season, the first after Larry David stepped back as showrunner, when the writers leaned into bigger, more outlandish plots.
It’s a great example of the show’s real-world influence: a throwaway joke about breakfast that ended up changing how people talked about muffins.
