The Éclair Moment That Defined George Costanza in ‘The Gymnast’

The Éclair Moment That Defined George Costanza in 'The Gymnast'

In season 6’s “The Gymnast,” which aired on November 3, 1994, George is on his best behavior while visiting his girlfriend’s family.

A Perfect First Impression

He charms his girlfriend’s mother so much by offering to clear the dishes that Mrs. Enright calls him a gentleman. For once, George seems to be doing everything right.

Then Comes the Éclair

Moments later, she catches him biting into a half-eaten chocolate éclair he fished out of her kitchen trash. Just like that, the good impression is gone.

“Adjacent to Refuse Is Refuse”

Back at Jerry’s apartment, George insists the pastry was sitting “above the rim” on a magazine with a doily, so it shouldn’t really count as garbage.

Jerry isn’t having it: “Adjacent to refuse is refuse.” George, he says, has crossed the line between man and bum. It’s one of the show’s most quoted exchanges, and George’s indignant defense is pure Jason Alexander.

The Rest of the Episode

“The Gymnast” is also remembered for Jerry’s storyline, in which he dates a Romanian gymnast and discovers that her flexibility doesn’t translate quite the way he’d hoped.

Did Alexander Say George “Lost His Charm”?

Viral posts sometimes claim Jason Alexander said George “lost his charm” after the éclair moment. But there’s no interview or DVD commentary with that wording.

On Emmy TV Legends, Alexander actually called George a “really charming character” precisely because he owns his dysfunction.

Why It Endures

The scene is a perfect example of how quickly George can destroy a good thing, and how far he’ll go to justify it afterward. More than 30 years later, fans still can’t look at a pastry near a trash can without thinking of it.
