James Gunn has responded to fans questioning where the DCU is heading after Clayface, and he’s standing firmly behind standalone stories.
What Gunn Said
Replying on Threads to fans who felt the DCU isn’t building toward anything, Gunn described it as “just an alternate universe” where the studio can step in at any point and tell a particular story. He added that he dislikes the idea that individual films only matter if they lead to something bigger.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be crossovers. Gunn said there will still be big connected moments down the line, but other movies don’t exist just to set them up.
As for Clayface itself, he said he’d love audiences to see it “because it’s a great, fun horror movie unto itself.”
A Different Approach
It’s a clear contrast to the strategy that defined superhero movies for the past decade, when almost every release teased the next one with post-credits scenes and cameos. Audiences have shown signs of fatigue with that model, and Gunn seems determined to let each DCU project stand on its own.
The variety of the slate backs that up. The DCU has already moved between the big-screen optimism of Superman, the comedy of Peacemaker, a body-horror take on Clayface, and even a true-crime mockumentary in The People v. Gorilla Grodd.
Will Fans Buy In?
Not everyone is convinced. Some fans want the clear sense of a building story that kept them returning to the MCU for years. Others welcome the freedom for filmmakers to make different kinds of movies within the same world.
Gunn and Peter Safran have made it clear they believe good individual films are the best way to build a lasting universe. Whether audiences embrace that freedom will be one of the big questions as the DCU continues to grow.
