The families in Modern Family were loosely inspired by the real families and friends of the show’s creators. Nowhere is that clearer than with the three Dunphy kids.
A Real-Life Blueprint
Co-creator Steve Levitan drew heavily on his own family when developing the Dunphys. When the show was being created, his children were almost exactly the same ages as their on-screen counterparts: Hannah was 15, Alexa was 13 and Griffin was 11.
Those ages lined up with Haley, Alex and Luke, giving the characters a grounding in real sibling dynamics: the social eldest, the brainy middle child and the lovable, scatterbrained youngest.
Why It Worked
Basing the kids on real people helped the Dunphy household feel authentic. The sibling squabbles, teenage drama and parenting mishaps all had a ring of truth because, in many cases, they came from what Levitan was living through at home.
It fits the show’s origins too. Modern Family grew out of Levitan and Christopher Lloyd swapping stories about their families, so it’s no surprise those real-life experiences found their way into the characters.
Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter and Nolan Gould brought Haley, Alex and Luke to life for 11 seasons, but the blueprint came from a very real family.
