In the Modern Family episode “Game Changer,” Phil is desperate to get an iPad for his birthday, while Jay tries to teach Mitchell how to defend himself.
The Chokehold Lesson
During the lesson, Jay demonstrates a chokehold and mentions that he learned it from the Gracies, a family famous for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The Gracie family is credited with developing and popularizing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and their influence helped shape modern mixed martial arts. So Jay name-dropping them was a nice detail for martial arts fans.
The Real Black Belt
That line wasn’t just a throwaway joke. Ed O’Neill, who plays Jay, has a real black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He began training under the Gracie family and earned his black belt in 2007, after years of dedication.
In other words, the martial arts know-how behind Jay’s lesson came straight from O’Neill’s own experience on the mat. That may explain why he looks so convincing putting Mitchell in a hold.
The Rest of the Episode
“Game Changer” aired during the show’s first season, and Phil’s iPad storyline captured a very specific moment in time, when Apple’s first tablet was about to launch and everyone wanted one.
Phil’s attempts to get his hands on one, and the lengths he’ll go to, are classic Phil Dunphy, the ultimate gadget-loving dad.
Authenticity on Screen
It’s a great example of how an actor’s real-life skills can add authenticity to a sitcom scene. Writers often work actors’ hobbies into scripts, and this one paid off.
It also adds a fun layer to Jay’s character. The gruff family patriarch already seemed like someone you wouldn’t want to cross.
Knowing O’Neill could actually back it up makes Jay Pritchett even more intimidating, and even more fun to watch.
