The Dunphy Kitchen Wall Tracked the Kids’ Real Heights

Nolan Gould, Ariel Winter and Sarah Hyland on the Modern Family set

Fans who watched Modern Family closely may have spotted a sweet detail hiding in plain sight. A wall in the Dunphy family kitchen was used to track the real heights of the show’s young stars as they grew up.

A Growth Chart on Set

Sarah Hyland (Haley), Ariel Winter (Alex) and Nolan Gould (Luke) had their heights marked on the wall over the years, just like any family might do with their own kids. Because the show ran for 11 seasons, those pencil marks turned into a behind-the-scenes time capsule of their childhood and teenage years.

Growing Up With Their Characters

The detail is especially meaningful given how young the cast was when the show began. Winter was around 11 and Gould around 10 when the pilot was filmed, and by the time the series ended in 2020 they were both adults. Viewers effectively watched them grow up in real time alongside Alex and Luke.

The Dunphy house itself stayed largely the same throughout the series, which made it the perfect place to record those changes. While the characters went off to college, started careers and moved on, that kitchen wall quietly kept track of how far they had come.

It’s a small touch, but it captures exactly why Modern Family felt like a real family to so many viewers.
