No Modern Family Lead Left During Its 11-Season Run

The Modern Family cast

Long-running sitcoms almost always lose someone along the way, whether to contract disputes, new projects or creative differences. Modern Family was a rare exception. Not one of its six original adult leads left the series during its entire 11-season run.

The Core Six

Ed O’Neill (Jay), Sofía Vergara (Gloria), Julie Bowen (Claire), Ty Burrell (Phil), Eric Stonestreet (Cam) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) were there from the pilot in 2009 to the finale in 2020. Across 250 episodes, they built the Dunphy, Pritchett and Tucker-Pritchett families together, and the child actors around them literally grew up on set.

Why It Mattered

That stability was a big part of the show’s success. The cast’s chemistry only grew over time, and fans never had to adjust to a recast parent or a sudden exit. It also helped that the ensemble was so balanced, with the show winning five straight Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The cast famously went to bat for each other too, including negotiating together in 2012 for better pay. That kind of loyalty is part of why the show stayed intact for more than a decade.

For a comedy with so many moving parts, keeping the same core family together from start to finish is one of Modern Family‘s quietest achievements.
