The Witcher Season 4: What To Expect For Geralt And Ciri’s Future?

Toss a coin to your witcher, as Geralt of Rivia is back in Netflix’s The Witcher season 4. It will be played by a different actor, with a new face, possibly with very little explanation but Geralt will be back on screen again. While fans are still mourning Henry Cavill’s exit from the show, Season 4’s filming was already underway in the UK in 2024. The makers have also shared the first look of Liam Hemsworth as Netflix’s Geralt of Rivia but the release date is yet to be confirmed. Fans could have to wait till the end of 2025 to see the new season.

The Witcher is one of Netflix’s hit fantasy series based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. It follows a fictional character of supernatural powers set in a fictional, medieval-inspired landmass known as the Continent. The leading character or the titular character aka The Witcher is also known as Geralt of Rivia. He along with a witch Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri go on adventures across the Continent fulfilling their destiny and fate entangled by each other. The show was mainly led by Henry Cavill till season 3 alongside Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan.

The Witcher Season 3 Had 2 Parts

The Witcher season 3 adapted Andrzej Sapkowski’s Time of Contempt and set up the next chapter in the stories of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. Henry Cavill’s final The Witcher season was split into two parts. Part 2 saw the Thanedd coup’s battle and its aftermath, focusing on how it affected all three main characters. While the first part brought them together and built them up as a family, part 2 separated Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. They can be seen setting out on a journey of their own and are going through some significant changes by the time season 4 arrives.

Season 3 Finale

The finale concluded with a setup for a major conflict between Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms. The biggest conflict was Nilfgaard’s attack on Aretuza and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. It was followed by the destruction of northern villages which will set the stage for an epic battle in season 4. Meanwhile, Vilgefortz’s hunt for Ciri continues and the finale hints that it will play a significant role as he seeks to change the Continent using the Monoliths.

Ciri, Yennefer and Geralt’s Future?

The pyromantic vision of Jaskier, Geralt, and Yennefer dying because of her, Ciri decided in season 3 that she no longer wants to follow her destiny. Instead, she decided to blend in with the Rants and live a “normal” life. Ciri also chose to hide her powers and identity by giving herself a different name, Falka. The identity and name is based on the experience she had in the desert. For season 4, Ciri will likely remain separated from Geralt for most of the episodes.

Geralt’s focus in season 3 has been neutrality. However, with another war approaching between the North and Nilfgaard it seems like Geralt’s neutrality is over. Leaving Renfri’s brooch in the finale was also a significant moment for Geralt setting up his journey in The Witcher season 4. Unlike Geralt and Ciri, Yennefer’s story in The Witcher season 3 diverged from the books significantly, including her ending. If season 4 follows through on the books, it will take a while before she reunites with either of them.

What To Expect From The Witcher Season 4

Netflix released a synopsis for season 4 and said, it will follow the dramatic events of season 3 as Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri must navigate a war-ravaged Continent filled with demons, often apart from each other. If they can lead the groups of misfits they encounter, they might survive the baptism of fire and reunite. Season 4 will also see Liam Hemsworth replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and follow his journey to Nilfgaard as he tries to find Ciri. It is also expected to cover the Continent’s reaction to Emhyr’s marriage to Cirila, aka Fake Ciri. Both Ciri and Yennefer will continue on their solo journeys too based on what happens in Time of Contempt.

Similar to the early season of The Witcher, season 4 will explore three separate storylines. Geralt will try to find Ciri while not being aware that Nilfgaard does not have the real one. Yennefer and the other sorceress will try to rebuild Aretuza and fight Vilgefortz’s influence. Meanwhile, Ciri will embark on a long journey that starts with the Rats, away from both Geralt and Yennefer.

Geralt’s new look explained

The popular theory states that Geralt’s fight against Vilgefortz would leave him with permanent scars. According to books, he loses miserably and will be scarred, similar to the ending of Season 3. This then can be used to explain Geralt’s different look in season 4.

Who Will Return For Season 4?

Both Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan are expected to return as Yennefer, and Ciri respectively. Additionally, Laurence Fishburne is reportedly set to join the cast as Regis, a vampire and barber-surgeon from the books and video games. Meanwhile, returning characters include Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni), Cahir (Eamon Farren), Francesca (Mecia Simson), Triss (Anna Shaffer), Dara (Wilson Mbomio), Istredd (Royce Pierreson), Sabrina Glevissig (Therica Wilson-Read), Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen), Dijkstra (Graham McTavish), and Phillipa (Cassie Clare).

Similar to season 4, season 3 also saw some new additions to the case such as Nilfgaardian Emperor Emhyr (Bart Edwards), Radovid (Hugh Skinner), and Milva (Meng’er Zhang), and all three are also expected to return for the upcoming episodes.

The Witcher Season 5

According to reports, The Witcher has been renewed for a fifth season which will act as the final one for the series. The makers reportedly plan to shoot the instalments back-to-back but may not release the latter until 2026 or later. The show has been a hit throughout the first three seasons along with the n-number of spin-offs it led to. However, it is unclear how fans would react to the return of Geralt played by Liam and not Henry Cavill.
