After the massive success of “The Big Bang Theory,” Jim Parsons became synonymous with his on-screen character, Sheldon Cooper. Thanks to Parsons’ flawless portrayal of the super-smart yet obnoxious character, the show became one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. However, after nearly twelve years on air, the show ended unexpectedly with season 12. This decision was driven by Parsons’ desire to enjoy life and two other significant reasons.
Why Jim Parsons Left Despite Million-Dollar Salary
According to reports, Jim Parsons had more than enough on his plate in 2017, juggling a shoot for “The Boys in the Band” and a commercial for Intel. What made it even more stressful was that he had to handle these commitments right after finishing filming for season 11 of “The Big Bang Theory.”

Without taking any breaks between projects, Parsons’ mental health deteriorated. He was deeply affected when his 14-year-old dog, whom he had with his husband Todd Spiewak a year after they met, fell ill and passed away unexpectedly. Despite this, he kept pushing forward until he broke his foot on set, which finally forced him to take a break and realize how frantically he had been living.
The other reason behind his departure from the beloved series was a rather sad one. While shooting season 12, Parsons realized that he was only six years away from turning 52, the age at which his father had passed away. Although he didn’t believe he would face the same fate, he didn’t want to spend his remaining years constantly working.
According to reports, Jim Parsons and his co-stars were earning $1 million per episode during the final seasons of “The Big Bang Theory” and were offered more than $50 million, including profits, to stay for two more years. However, Parsons remained firm in his decision to leave, finally listening to the universe’s multiple signs to slow down.
How Jim Parsons Felt Leaving Sheldon Cooper Behind After 12 Years
“I didn’t know that I was searching for it but between the dog and the foot, I was just like … ‘Okay. Let’s take charge here.’ It has been fascinating to think about who I was 12 years ago. And sometimes when I have trouble learning a line or saying a line of Sheldon’s right now, it’s hard to know why specifically. But it’s like, you’re not the same person you were. There is a possibility that this actually became more difficult for you in a way. And I don’t know what that means, but it’s like you just change.”
Leaving behind his iconic character Sheldon Cooper after 12 years was a significant and emotional decision for Jim Parsons. Despite the challenges and intense work schedule, Parsons found immense fulfillment and joy in playing Sheldon. However, he recognized the need to prioritize his well-being and personal life.

Reflecting on his departure, Parsons has expressed a mix of gratitude and relief. He is thankful for the incredible journey and the lasting impact of the show but also relieved to have taken a step back to focus on himself. Now, Parsons is enjoying life at a slower pace, appreciating each moment and the new opportunities that come his way.
“The Big Bang Theory” remains beloved by fans worldwide, especially for the character of Sheldon Cooper. You can stream all 12 seasons of “The Big Bang Theory” on HBO Max.
